The Shleps
The Shleps
2002 Moshe Pippik Productions
www.theshleps.com

The Shleps self-titled debut album is a collection of parodies of 60’s songs from the Beatles, Sonny and Cher and others. Barry McGuire’s Eve of Destruction becomes Eve of Moshiach, and Tammy Wynette’s Stand By Your Man becomes His Name’s Haman. The songs all have a positive, pro-Jewish religion message.

Like a Jewish children’s album, keeping the Shabbat and performing mitzvoth are encouraged in chipper, catchy songs all sung in English. The liner notes thank Lenny Solomon of Schlock Rock and 50’s comedian Allan Sherman as influences.

The tracks are sung and performed well and although the style is satire, the presentation is serious. Nevertheless, there are many who will roll their eyes and proclaim this CD to be worthy of much ridicule. Then there are others who won’t be able to get enough of hearing "it’s Shabbos yeah, yeah yeah" and will sing and laugh along with their kids.
